I don't always make sense, but I blog to vent. If people knew all the things that were going on in my head they would be shocked...not a bad shock, but a surprising shock.

Waiting in anticipation
I heard the song for the first time this week and fell in love with it from the first words. I can't wait till the whole cd comes out...think it will be July 7th. I feel love songs are making a come back...not lust songs...think my might a topic for my next blog. Had a discussion on facebook a while ago and need to vent more.

From the hood to the board room
This morning I was having a convo with my mom and discussing how this generation has a lot to deal with. The picture to the right is a shirt from a company started by some of my classmates. Check out the website dangerousNEGRO. They have information about empowerment and great clothes. The shirt and the convo my mom had sparked this blog.
Let me preface this blog by saying I am a 3rd generation college student and went to, in my opinion, the best college in the country, Vanderbilt. My mother was an educator who taught in inner city schools her whole life and was great at it. She made the statement that I have to balance being educated and being able to relate to the hood also. Now don't get it twisted, my life was blessed and I am far from hood (ghetto tendencies come out, but rare). My mom was trying to portray the point that we have to balance hanging out with cousin "pookie" at the family dinner, but then go to the meeting with "Braxton Hollingsworth." You feel me???
We have to operate in two societies. This is not entirely about race, but economic, social, and class status. My mom and grandmother went to Historically Black Colleges, but I did not, but I also have cousins that did. I am not here to argue which is better, my opinion is to each is own. I have had other experiences that my family members have not and have been exposed to things they have not...and vice versa.
I take it even further and I work in two societies. I do research at two universities, one an HBCU and one at a majority institution. It is two different worlds and it is taking me a while to get use to. Being able to see both sides of each institution, neither is perfect, but each has stereotypes and ideas of the other...some true, some not. But being and African American who is accepted by both institutions it makes me think about the bigger picture.
I wrote all this to say, How do you accomplish from going to the hood to the board room? Make sense? How do you balance being able to keep your touch with everyone from different walks of life? The statement is general, but I hope you get what I am saying.

Who is a true friend???
I have had a lot going on in my life and getting to the point where I can write again and get some things off my chest...
Who do you consider your true friend?Do we really have true friends? I am beginning to realize the difference in friends and acquaintances. I see that if you put this statement in the picture as a description of your friends you might not have that many.
I think friends are people that you can depend on and you enjoy spending time with. Friends accept you for who you are and don't judge you, but they hold you accountable. You will not always agree with them and you might even fight, but they have your back. The challenge you and help you become a better person.
In my life I have very few friends and honestly...I like it that way. And surprisingly most people don't take the time to become a true friend to most. People have superficial relationships and they honestly do not take the time to get to know people.
When I started this blog I began to write out things that I do not tell people about and a way to get things off my chest. It actually works to vent. I have honestly not gotten to write about everything that is on my mind but this is a start. Don't know if people read, most people do not comment, but it is my way of expressing myself.
Ok...I got sidetracked. I guess I will end this blog with a question and a video. Who do you consider a true friend, or what qualities do you want in a true friend and why???

Love it!
Ok...This was one of the few songs on the Mary Mary cd that I liked, but now I am loving the video. It has a great message and when you look at the video it makes a statement. What statement does it make to you?

Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man
I really believe that I might be one of the only woman in the world who is not a fan of this book. Don't get me wrong. I enjoy listening to Steve in the morning and I usually enjoy his comedy, but I am not getting into this book and I refuse to buy it or read it. I even like to listen to some of the advice that he gives out in the morning, don't agree with it all, but everyone has their own opinion.
I have heard women going around talking about this book like it is the Bible...which it is not. What is weird to me, most guys I have heard are not feeling the book and it is not because they think Steve is giving out all the secrets. They think women think ALL men think they way Steve talks about how they think. Guys are not all the same.
There might even be a few good points in the book, but when you continuously quote the book and bring up to men..."well Steve Harvey says." I am pretty sure he will not take well to that. Steve Harvey always says he is an expert on men, but not relationships (considering he has been married 3 times), but most of the advice he gives is on relationships.
I am far from a hater of Steve. I love what he tries to do to mentor the kids and a lot of things he says on the radio and I do respect him for this book, but I think women should not continue and think this is the book to understand all men or master how men think.
I have yet to hear a man say good things about the book and that makes me wonder....

Update on life
Today I decided to write for the first time in a while. Life has been busy, but good. I have made some changes in my life. One change is my hair...You have seen the profile picture which is the first cut, which most of my friends say that it was not short at all. Now my hair is....
It has been highlighted and cut short and I love it for now...We will see how long this lasts.
I am ready for the summer and vacations so far. Atlanta and Chicago are on the radar, but if I have time and money I want to add another place. I am so up for suggestions.
Well I have to get back to work. I will be writing more and getting more of my thoughts out in the near future. Life is good and this is only the beginning!!!
